Police develop national mugshot database for CCTV matching

750,000 facial images have been recorded in a trial being carried out by police in Lancashire, Mersyside and West Yorkshire.

The aim is to produce a national database of mugshots that can then be matched against CCTV images. Currently everyone arrested for a criminal offence has their photo taken. Police can match these mugshots against CCTV images on a regional level but eventually these images will be stored on a national database that any force can access.

The national system should be launched in 2009.
