A Soham man has been jailed for ten months after being convicted of stealing £2000 of lead from a church roof in Ely, reports the Cambridge Evening News.
Carl Scarrow and his accomplice Joe Allgood were previously accused of stealing metal from the Environment Agency office in Ely.
Metal theft is a rising problem across the country as the price of metals, particularly lead, has risen sharply over the last year. Churches are prime targest for lead thieves because of the quantity used in roof lining and the poor level of security.
The rise in metal theft is not confined to the UK however, as this report in The Register demonstrates.
