Thieves are stealing lead from church roofs as the price of the metal reaches £1450 per tonne.
The price of lead has tripled over the past year and this sharp rise has triggered a spate of thefts, with 79 incident reported in Basildon and Thurrock alone since the beginning of April. Over the past 15 months an estimated £1 million worth of lead has been stolen across the country.
Church roofs are prime targets for the the thieves because of the quantity of lead available.
