Proposed legislation to upgrade CCTV across the nation has been postponed for at least three months, reports The Register.
In 2006 the Home Office and the Association of Chief Police Officers carried out a joint review of CCTV facilities throughout the country. The findings of the review were to be the basis of new legislation governing the type of CCTV equipment that CCTV operators can use.
The delay is due to a belated consultation with civil liberties groups, many of whom have reservations about the use of CCTV and its impact on privacy.
